Qazi Hussain Ahmad Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami was born at Zariat Kaka Sahib in Nowshera, NWFP in 1938. He is the youngest son of a great religious luminary Qazi Muhammad Abdur Rab who not only excelled in religious knowledge but also was active in politics and the President of NWFP Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad received his early education at home and was later admitted to Islamia College, Peshawar. He secured his M.Sc. degree in Geography from Peshawar University. After completing his education he taught for three years at the graduate level. His inclination towards business led him to discontinue his teaching career and set up his own business. He was elected as the Vice President of NWFP Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad was associated with the Islamic Movement during his college days where he joined Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba. He became member of Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan in 1978, and was latter elected President of Jamaat-e-Islami Peshawar branch. He served Jamaat-i-Islami as Secretary and then Ameer of NWFP province. He was raised to the office of Secretary General, Jamaat-e-Islami in 1978. He was elected as the Ameer (Chief) of the Jamaat-e-Islami in 1987 and got re-elected as Ameer consecutively three times in 1992, 1994, and 1999 and still continues to serve in that capacity.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad was elected as member of the Senate in 1986 for a term of six years and was again re-elected in March 1992. He, however, resigned from the senate in 1996 in protest against the government’s policies.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad has represented the Jamaat at various international forums. He has mediated on various issues concerning the Muslim Ummah by leading numerous missions to many countries. He has played an active role in mobilization and organization of the party. In 1997 he launched a nationwide campaign to expand the party membership. As a result of his open membership campaign about 4.5 million new members were added to the Jamaat. For amelioration and betterment of the poor and the oppressed he has also established and patronized the organizations like Shabab-e-Milli and Pasban.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad has been jailed a number of times. He is strongly opposed to allow American troops to use Pakistan’s soil in the war on terrorism against neighboring Afghanistan. Qazi Sahib is also deadly against L.F.O. and struggling hard for the sovereignty of the Parliament and the Constitution. He played a major role in bringing all the religious parties together in forming the alliance of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) for contesting the October 10 elections. Qazi Hussain Ahmad was elected as the Vice President while Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani of JamialUlma-e-Pakistan is the President of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal. He contested the October election as a candidate of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) from three constituencies and won all the three NA seats.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad and his alliance MMA are now in the Opposition. He has reiterated that instead of joining the government he would like to work for the restoration of the constitution, supremacy of the parliament and the strengthening of democracy in Pakistan.

Qazi Hussain Ahmed is an eloquent orator and an author of several books. Apart from him having a thorough command over Pushtu, Urdu and English he can speak in Arabic and Persian as well. Qazi Sahib is married and is the father of four children.
